Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT)
Intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), is a specialized form of 3D-CRT (Conformal Radiation Therapy) that allows radiation to be more exactly shaped to fit the tumor. With IMRT, the radiation beam can be broken up into many “beamlets,” and the intensity of each beamlet can be adjusted individually. Using IMRT, it may be possible to further limit the amount of radiation that is received by healthy tissue near the tumor which may allow a higher dose of radiation to be delivered to the tumor.
Image Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT)
Image-Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT), conformal radiation treatment guided by imaging, such as CT, ultrasound or X-rays, performed in the treatment room. During IGRT, doctors compare these images to the original CT information to determine accurate placement of the treatment fields while avoiding nearby healthy tissue. In some cases, doctors will implant a tiny marker in or near the tumor to use as a reference point.
3-Dimensional Conformal Therapy
WRTC has the ability to provide this precise technique of delivering high doses of radiation therapy. 3-D Conformal Therapy typically delivers radiation from multiple directions, while sparing normal tissue. Higher doses can be delivered to the tumor site utilizing this method.
Prostate Seed Implants
Radioactive seed implants using Iodine 125 or Palladium are available through the collaborative efforts of WRTC, Sentara Regional Medical Center and local urologists. Implants may be the primary treatment for a patient diagnosed with prostate cancer, or combined with external beam therapy. The select plan of care is basically patient-driven and is, in many cases, the treatment of choice to eliminate a long course of treatment and multiple visits for external beam radiation therapy.
Immobalization Devices
WRTC constructs custom-made devices to assure patients are able to stay in the correct treatment position with no motion. These devices, called Alpha Cradles and Aquaplast, are essential for the precise technique used in conformal therapy. Additionally, the Aquaplast (or masks) used for head and neck patients eliminate the need for visible skin marks. Alpha Cradles (or molds) are also important in assuring patient comfort.
Clinical Trials
Radiation oncologists collaborate with medical oncologists in offering patients National Cancer Institute approved clinical trials.
