| Potentially, radiation can affect the diet of the patient depending on where the patient is receiving treatment. In patients with throat cancers and cancers of the head and neck area, the throat becomes quite sore and the patients are not able to ingest hot or spicy foods. In chest tumors, the esophagus becomes quite irritated, and again, the diet must be altered to accommodate this. In tumors of the pelvic area, including prostate and cancers of the uterus/cervix, patients experience some diarrhea, which also may alter the overall diet. There is a nutritionist on the staff of the Williamsburg Radiation Therapy Center who will be meeting with every patient and monitoring their weight and also providing nutritional counseling.
