On December 2,1996 the labor and aspirations of Riverside Health System, and Williamsburg
Community Hospital came to fruition when the first patient was treated at the
center. The official opening ceremony was held on November 22 with all board members
present to cut the ribbons. This was followed by two days of open house, which
were a great success with many people from the Williamsburg community coming to
look at their radiation therapy center. Interested groups were given a comprehensive
guided tour by members of the staff during the opening week and continue to do
so to the present day.
During the first year of operation 304 new patients received treatment. They
came mainly from the immediate Williamsburg area, but also significant numbers
were from the Middle Peninsula and West Point areas.
Early on it was apparent that the center was seeing more patients than originally
anticipated, and toward the end of the first year and additional therapist was
added to the staff roster.
